I have moved to robincamille.livejournal.com. I'll be posting more art.
I know, I hate it when people move their blogs, too. Anyway, please add me as your friend. |

| 1950s films |
[Oct. 16th, 2007|01:05 am] |
I watched Rear Window today for my Modern Culture & Media class. I hadn't watched it in years and I'd forgotten how well-made (and suspenseful) it is! And as a girl, can I just say... Grace Kelly's dresses and pearls are absolutely gorgeous. I'm going to wear pearls tomorrow. With, um... A t-shirt, probably.
Question: what sort of accent do characters in 1950s films (and 40s and 30s...) have? Is it just the way people spoke then? It's somehow smooth and a little yowl-y at times. Grace Kelly in particular has a very beautiful but peculiar manner of speaking. It just SOUNDS rich and beautiful. You know?
I know that if I tried to emulate her, I'd (A) sound stupid and (B) sound pretentious. Oh, well. When you're Grace Kelly, nothing sounds pretentious, since you are after all the freaking Princess of Monaco.
I just read the wiki page on her life. Apparently she had an abortion? I had no idea about the scandals attached to her name. Unavoidable, maybe.
Imagine living the high life - gorgeous, talented, sought-after, wealthy, well-traveled... It's examples like Grace Kelly that make me want to stop dressing like a 2-year-old, stop fooling around, and grow up and be sophisticated and respected. But then I read Jack Kerouac and think of how free I could be.
It's a weird internal debate I've been having lately. Not much will come of it, probably. I tried to articulate it to Deven and figured out that it's probably the old I-want-to-stay-young vs. I-want-to-grow-up thing. It's so surreal to be older. To transition out of teenagerness. To have a job and to be thinking seriously about careers and things. I love it and I hate it. It's thrilling and it's exasperating.
I'll put it out of my head. In the meantime, where are those fake pearls I bought at the county fair?... |

Here's what my book arts class decided to print on our proofing press:

Then we found an old Coca-Cola ad plate from 1944:

Another thing I didn't know until recently:
Yuppie is derived from the phrase Young Urban Professional. That said, vaguely funny article. Would have been funnier if I'd read it in 1991.
Which was sixteen years ago. I feel old. |

| Letters I wish I could write |
[Oct. 4th, 2007|10:59 pm] |
Dear study center patrons,
I'd like to point out the "00 DECIBELS" sign hanging from the ceiling. That means this area is an absolute quiet zone. Why are you talking? Why are you high-fiving? The rest of us are composing essays and we need the silence to study. The sound of human breathing is about 10 decibels. You're in a 0 decibel area. STOP BREATHING.
Love, Robin

Dear athletes down my hall,

Dear Walter Benjamin,
I have a feeling that if you wrote in English, I'd understand you a lot more. You have some interesting ideas. Too bad I can't fully comprehend them. Either you need to write in English or hire a better translator, or God needs to give me a better brain.
Love, Robin
__________
Dear God,
Need brain. Pls send ASAP. V. important!!

| 40 page CV |
[Sep. 24th, 2007|02:07 pm] |
So I'm designing a poster for an on-campus lecture next month by this guy from Harvard, Jorge DomÃnguez, who's going to talk about "Race, Nation, Revolution, and Communist Rule in Cuba." I checked out his website and he has a freaking FORTY PAGE CV.
Wow. I wish I were that prolific. Books, TV, films, lectures, testimonies before the US court, book reviews... This guy is kind of amazing. I think I'll go to his lecture. |

Dames always guffawed at me and even fellows did in the john... Ladies always chuckled at me and even blokes in the commode... Virgins always whooped at me and even gars did in the free bathroom... Babes always whizgiggled at me and even lads did in the public latrine...
To which I ask only this: ...whizgiggled? ...Is that you, Willy Wonka? I told you to stay out of my inbox! |

| | Fight Club soundtrack | ] | This is just a post to say how cool garbage trucks are.
Yes, really. I watched as one stopped in front of my driveway. Those robotic arms slid out, clasped the trash can in a viselike grip, lifted it up, emptied it out, and put it back where it came from. How cool. What design. It reminded me of a spaceship, the way those arms came out and did their thing.
Next thing you know, there will be no need for a driver. The garbage truck will just drive itself around. Robotically. Like a spaceship.
IN OTHER NEWS, I am:
- looking for jobs on campus; I've already applied to be a computer help desk consultant and also a graphic designer
- working on two websites: my own and a campus group's, for which I'm getting paid (yay)
- working at Ann Taylor Loft
- working on editing my Cynic's Creed story so I can bind it (using Blurb) and shop it around agents and publishers (big talk for a girl who has no idea what she is doing)
- getting restless. I actually WANT to go back to school!!
So essentially, I'm working! |
